Too many people get hung up on spending upgrades: tuners, nut (fraught with danger), steel trem block, saddles, pickups. On the Squier guitars I'll swap pots 'n caps, check the frets for level (and level if many of them are uneven), and swap out the switch and jack for the typical brands. The lower winds mean you retain clarity and avoid muddiness. Generally, the modern Indonesian Strats have stronger magnets and lower bobbin winding so you get similar output to classic Strat pickups but with less noise. Ceramic pickups have stronger magnets than Alnico, so you need to set them lower to the pickguard if you are trying to get 'classic Strat tones' than you might find pickup height setup specs (that were developed by the factory for weaker alnico magnets). You can push around a 'bad sounding' guitar by swapping $20 in pots and caps (when careful of the actual measured values of those parts) just as easily as swapping a couple sets of $200 pickups. but they often attribute it to the magical lumber). Pickup height/tip bass vs treble are important, pots 'n caps Measured values are very important (pots have a 20% tolerance range and some players like lower spec 'dark' sounding or higher spec 'bright' sounding pots and caps. Your tones will come from the pickups plus the pots 'n caps. Sometimes laminated bodies weigh more, sometimes not, and this can be an issue if you want a light weight body to lug to a gig or play standing up for several hours. Laminated bodies make the same tones as single piece magical lumber. Wood only matters to the marketing advertisement prose.
